Meeting Minutes 2005

LGBT/QIC the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender/Queer Issues Caucus of the national art education association
2005 Annual Business Meeting
Lincoln Room, Hilton
Boston, Massachusetts
06 March 2005

Present: Sid Ames, BLAISE [Mindi’s baby], Tracy Burton, John C. Chamberlin, Kim Cosier, Beth Anne Cummings, Melanie Davenport, Sherry Edwards, Clayton Funk, Kathryn Gainey, Trevis Geary, Donalyn Heise, Susan M. Moreno de la Garnica, Mindi Rhoades, James H. Sanders, Robert J. Saunders, Tom Schantz, Debbie Smith-Shank, Moxie Stoermer, Steve Sutton, Chuck Weider, Gabriel Washington, Jessie L. Whitehead

Co- President James Sanders called the meeting to order at 8:05 a.m. The meeting began with introductions and announcements.

James Sanders provided an update on the old business of the Caucus naming transition. As a result of dialogue that extended beyond the Denver meeting, and the resultant e-balloting, the Caucus will move forward to the NAEA with the name change, LGBT/Queer Issues Caucus. Sanders asked for a motion to accept the minutes of the Denver Colorado Annual Meeting of 2004. Mindi Rhodes moved and Debbie Smith-Shank seconded the motion, which passed without dissent.

Kim Cosier shared news of an article submitted to the Journal of Social Theory and Art Education that addressed the year-long dialogue regarding the approved name change to the Queer Issues Caucus in 2005. She also commented on the quality of discussion that had taken place during the multiple LGBT/QIC sponsored sessions and noted that all members would be encouraged to call the Caucus what ever best serve their political purposes and personal context.

The LGBTIC Financial Report was issued by Secretary/Treasurer, Jessie Whitehead after having been mailed out to all members in advance of the meeting. Debbie Smith-Shank moved and Tracy Burton seconded a motion to accept the financial report as presented.

The following reports were presented and approved by consensus:

The Delegates Assembly Report was presented by Donalyn Heise and John Chamberlin, with Donalyn noting her appreciation of having more than one delegate representing the group at the very time-consuming meetings.

The Archivist Report was submitted to James Sanders by archivist, Laurel Lampela and distributed in advance of the meeting by Secretary/Treasurer Jessie Whitehead. Laurel had asked that the group discuss the content of the report and determine what presentations, publications, accomplishments and publications should be included in subsequent reports. After a brief discussion, it was determined by consensus that all members’ professional activities would be included in the archivist report, regardless of content. The report will be separated so that the presentations, articles and exhibitions directly related to LGBT/Queer issues are listed in one grouping; a second list inclusive of activities, presentations and publications by members that are NOT focused on LGBTQ issues will also be included.

Clayton Funk provided an update on the LGBT/QIC website and presented a brief demonstration of the website. The link to the website is available on the NAEA site under the Special Issue Groups section.

Kim Cosier and James Sanders presided over new business that included the strategies for growth, development, defense of the caucus, and the slate of officers for 2005-2006.

Susan Moreno de la Garnica noted that there is an absence of the K-12 “voices” within the Caucus
and a need for curricula for these constituents. Tracy Burton identified what appears to be a division between K-12 and higher education within the NAEA at large. Kim Cosier stated that the future direction of the caucus would include the development of resources for the K-12 teachers. Susan Moreno de la Garnica volunteered to head up the initiative regarding K-12 curriculum development. Debbie Smith-Shank encouraged members to provide slides of their work, lesson plans, and links to their personal websites that could be placed on the LGBT/Queer Issues Caucus website.

A call for nominations for any open officer position was entertained by President Sanders. Jessie Whitehead agreed to continue as the Secretary/Treasurer. Donalyn Heise agreed to continue serving as the Delegate Assembly Representative if another member would serve with her. John Chamberlin asked to step down from that co-representative position, while Melanie Davenport volunteered to step into the role. While no nominations for co-Vice President were put forth during the formal meeting, afterwards Jon Ploof noted that he would be willing to serve in the male co-President role, serving as a co-President for the 2006-2008 term. With no additional nominations issued, Debbie Smith-Shank moved and Tom Schantz seconded a motion to accept the proposed slate of LGBT/Queer Issues Caucus officers by acclamation. The motion passed.

With no time remaining or business to conduct, the meeting was adjourned at 9:00 a.m.
